Presentation Boards of Project 2.

The project 1 is a preparatory assignment that focuses on investigating basic notions of the city and learning from examples of  community library around the world. We were introduced to basics of urban design and its relation to architecture and studied the programmatic function, societal role and spatial layout of a community library and architectural responses for urban infills.

In a group of 11 under Mr Kenny's tutorial group, we had an overview  of the formation of cities and basic concepts of urban design in relation to architectural design while compromised the site documentation, site analysis, precedent studies of urban infills and community library into the preliminary studies to understand the site and an insight into architectural responses for designing an urban infill community library. In addition, we investigated the role of community libraries in traditional and contemporary urban societies besides of examined the various examples and architectural responses for urban infills.

As our site is quite big, I was assigned to work with my partner, Nicole Hooi to conduct the site analysis in assigned zone. By working as a group, I learnt to conduct case studies and site analysis to generate an understanding of the physical and cultural context and development of the urban environment. I also learnt to determine the role of a community library in a contemporary urban setting while established appropriate architectural responses and strategies for designing within an urban infill site. Through this project in a group, we recorded the site analysis findings and communicated by documents like diagrams, mappings, photographic images, drawings and models for presentation. Lastly, I want to thank my groupmates who contributed their hard works to complete the project and having a teamwork spirit to overcome the problems and helping each other for problems solutions.

Module Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, I able to analyze the site character and identify conditions of the urban streetscape and urban behavioral patterns. Meanwhile, by analysing case studies, I able to understand the role and spatial programming of a community library in an urban setting while demonstrated the fundamental knowledge of design codes and regulations during the design stage of a library within the constraints and responses to the requirements. Moreover, I able to produce a design outcome for an urban contemporary library that encompassed the appropriate site-specific architectural responses through its formal, cultural, legislative, structural and environment design solutions. Furthermore, the architectural design ideas and scheme is communicated by drawings in 2D such as plan-section and elevational studies with explorations and resolved relevant aesthetic, construction, and environmental issues along with 3D demonstration, models, and presentations in verbal and visual.

INTRODUCTION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO 5

Architecture Design Studio 5 [ ARC 60306 / ARC 3117 / ARC 3118 ] focuses on the theme of place-making for the urban street. It aims to explore and provide appropriate architectural solutions in designing a community library for the city's inhabitants. We began by conducting preliminary studies in that introduces us to the studies and context of urbanity through the analysis and documentation of the current urban condition of a selected inner-city site. This was done in concurrence with the research of urban infill and community library precedents and our architectural responses. By the end of the module, we had developed an appropriate scheme for and urban contemporary community library within a dense inner-city street environment that takes into consideration an understanding of applicable current legislations, building technologies and cultural imperatives of the site and its surroundings.

In the final project as continuous from project 1, we concentrated on designing a community library within an urban infill site which is adjacent to Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah at Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. The design of the library took key aspects of urban design and context in relation to architecture considered with architectural responses and all ages and background of users' behaviour patterns. Meanwhile, the basic compliance of design codes and statutory requirements  to design such as setback line and fire escape standards. Apart from emphasiseded the elevational context and composition in developing architecture design, schematic design development phase is important in implement and explore the conceptual ideas.

Through the final project, I had deeper understand in demonstrating the knowledge of local design codes and regulations in building design while applying the knowledge of urban architectural typologies, infill design strategies, and community library programming for community activities and learning center in produce a design outcome for a community library that is sie-specific through its formal, cultural, legislative, structural and environmental design responses. Moreover, I learnt in utilise study models, diagramming, mapping, orthographic plan-section and elevational studies to explore and resolve relevant spatial, structural, functional and environmental issues in the design development phase. Throughout all these processes, I able to produce the drawings and creating effective 3D models to present them verbally and visually in communicating my design and architectural ideas and scheme.
