TAN ZI CIN'S E-PORTFOLIO

As a group of 24 members, we had assigned to Former District Officer Residence House located at Batu Gajah, Perak. This house was designed in combination of neoclassical architecture and malay architecture, for residence of senior British Civil Servant in the locality during colonial era. In this project 1, we were required to produce 10 sketches individually on A4 art block with a strong idea of the place that we have carried out the Measured Drawing exercise based on categories specific above. We may use any media to express our observation and including caption or annotation for each piece about what is drawn, then compiled with spiral bound with a transparent cover at the front and black mounting board at the back. For me, I chose pens and watercolour as they are my skilled media.
This is an on-site exercise project where students have to do sketches which include the physical and intangible quanlities of the buildings as well as the immediate context of the site. The sketches can be from an element as board as the urban planning itself down to the smallest detail of he ornaments used in the building.
This project is meant to enhance the students' graphic communication skills in capturing important details and the spirit of the place by training them to be observant to their surrounding while instil the culture of documenting as part of the learning process in architectural education.
As a start, it is compulsary for all students to sketch the plans, sections and elevations of the building that the group has measured, as an expression of the students' understanding of the building. Meanwhile, the sketches are to comprise at 2 each of these categories:
1. The Genius Loci
2. Poetic Quality
3. Cultural Attributes
4. Technical /Construction details

INDIVIDUAL
PROJECT 1: SKETCH BOOK AND JOURNAL
Methods of Documention and Measured Drawing ( ARC 1215 )
TUTOR: MR IZWAN NOR AZHAR
The subject aims to develop an understanding of the principles of building preservation and the method of recording it in three documentation methods: measured drawings, written documentation and photographic documentation. The ideas of application and management of architectural historic documentation will be presented as part of the overall knowledge of building preservation. For measured drawings, students are to document historically and architecturally significant buildings in the form of as-built drawings. The task requires 10 to 20 students per group that involve field works consisting measuring technique such as photographing, sketches, use of theodolite and measuring tape. The outcomes of the subject are collections of plans, sections, elevations, details and axonometric views / models; complemented with a report that explains about the background, history, concept, style, construction and ornamentation of buildings.

- Explain the application of architectural historic documentation.
- Recognize and recall techniques of measured drawing and documentation.
- Explain the as-built building constructions, architectural details and elements.
- Describe architectural cultural heritage.
- Execute fieldwork and hands-on measurements.
- Translate measured data into scale drawings.
Learning Outcomes
In this project, we were given 5 days to complete on site measuring. During the measuring exercise, I have learnt the way in using measuring devices and AutoCAD for recording and documentation. To make the documentation more efficent, my subgroup, the ground floor plan team (Tan Cui Zhi, Fawwaz, Julia and me with help of first floor plan team) deicided to cad on site after measure the building which enable us to find out the measurement problem easier and solved faster. Through this project, I had realised the important of teamwork, coordination and efficiency of group members to work together in order to complete all the drawings. Also, I really glad with the leadership of seniors in guiding me to solve the problems in AutoCAD drawings which allowed our group can complete the drawings efficiently.
Project 2 was carried out throughout the semester as we assigned as a group of 24 members to measure and document on site then translate all the information into a set of drawings and a model of the historical building, which was Former District Officer Residence House at Batu Gajah, Perak. Apart from execute fieldwork and doing the hands-on measurement exercise on site, we also need to do additional research in order to piece together all the important data about the building. In this project 2, we were required to produce A1 and A3 sized drawings including:
Key plan, Location plan, Site plan, Roof plan, Floor plans, Elevations, Sections, Exploded axonometric and Details.
Also, produce a physical model creatively to show the construction of building by using balsa wood.

The report is a document that accompanies the set of drawings for the building that is measured during this semester. Basically, the report will elaborate on the significance of the building being measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. In this report, students are required to relate the architecture of the building to its significance, highlighting how the two support the inhabitation of the building. A video documenting the building is required to provide 3D experience of the building.
