The issue have to be genuine nad any solution provided by our team must have an impact to the environment and community. The purpose of this project is to futher develop our communication skills. By working in teams we are given the opportunity to deepen our teamwork abilities. We are allowed to create and adapt strategies in gaining the knowledge of our team and contribute to that knowledge while developing the good professional design practices in the future. Thus in participating this project, we can engage and embrace with the theme while examine and reflect on the notions of community as its active member. Through interactive and dynamic exercises, we can gained a deeper understanding of environment and our responsibility to the community, practice solving real-world challenges using creative ideas.

PROJECT 1   My Community My Commitment
Exploring the sense of environmental and community engagement as future designer

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABLE DESIGN (ARC 1413 / 1412 / BLD 60203)
TUTOR: MR SIVARAMAN

My groupmates in this project were Eelyn Cheong Siew Ying, Chia Wee Min, Teoh Hui Yu, Wong Voon Yin, Vicky Lee Wei Kee, Evon Low Siew Cheng, Chin Jovi, Chua Chang Yeong, Edwin Ho Khai Vun and me (Tan Zi Cin). We chose Good Samaritan Home (GSH) located at No 2, Lebuh Jelutong, Taman Selatan, 41200 Klang, Selangor, as our site to carry out our project. Good Samaritan Home (GSH) is an orphanage house with 36 children. They also have pets such as dogs, rabbits, lizards, and geese which donated by the public, placed in front of the house.

Before we visit the place, we had contact the person in charge, Mr Robert for permission to carry out our project at their place. After approved, we heading to Klang by cars drove by our groupmates. At the orphanage house, we were leaded by Mr Robert to visit the house and we find out the condition of interior house was still in good condition. However, the messy surrounding of the exterior of the house especially the garden part and the condition of the dog house became a threat for the children who playing around the garden area and walk into the dog house might causing injury. Thus, we proposed our ideas to design a proper shelter for the dog and rearranged the surrounding of the front house (entrance of the house) after group disscusion. The work was spent about 2 months in developing our ideas into a real build-up shelter. The design proposal and the report of work was then submitted in an A4 hardcopy and a compilation of projects into a multimedia presentation.

On the other hand, we had an activities with the children on the last day we visit them and had a lot of fun in interaction with them. Their happy faces and laughs become our satisfication on our hardworks to serve the community. Through this project, I have learnt to be appreciate on what I had in my life and the happiness in serving my community. Also, I also have more understanding on sustainability in environment and community engagement besides of playing my role and responsibility as a designer to solve the issue on the site in helping the community while creating the awareness and impact via our solution.
