This project is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. We are required to construct cubes using the listed materials to explore and understand the building making in relation to materials, design considerations of material according to their properties and understand how the intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process.

The task of this project is to design and build two separate paper and wood cube to define a volume of 12” x 12” x12” inch space and produce an A2 presentation board regarding to our cube models.

From this project, I was able to express the material within its contextual application and effectively work with a material in line with design requirement. Besides, I learnt to recognize how intrinsic forms, limitations and boundaries of a material factor in a design process. This project taught me to be able to explore the space and materials of the cube and be more creative. Also, I find that this project is quiet  interesting as I have found the various designs of cubes and information of the designer on their design during the presentation. Each design of cubes have their own characteristics and it brings curiosity to me to discover how they construct their cubes and gave me inspiration on construction.

Building material is just about the types of  available material that has been used at one time or another for creating various human homes, structures, and technologies. This assignment is aimed to introduce building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. The spaces or building selected to study will allow one to understand the reasoning behind choices made by certain designer in terms of concept, functional use, environmental response, environmental profile, structural requirement, availability of resources and etc. It is also essential for students to see the transition from vernacular point of perspective to the current application in built environment.

From this project, we are requested to form a group of 5 and select a commercial/residential building which allows us to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module. My group members are Tang Kar Jun, Alex Vorosmarthy, Augustine Chen, and Daniel Mazlan.

PROJECT 2

THE MATERIALITY OF SPACE : AN EXPERIMENTIAL EXPLORATION

PART A GROUP - BURGER FACTORY

From part A, we have to briefly introduce the selected building and reason of selecting the space. We also need to produce a mood board which should include colours, patterns, photographs, sketches and informative design elements to reflect the materials used and ambience of the space. We then have to produce three A2 boards that include the identification of materials such as orthographic to indicate the materials and the application of materials consist of  physical and chemical properties of those materials, suitability of material used to context to concept, occupancy and climate. Furthermore, we have to explain and illustrate the findings in details in terms of suitability of the materials types, application, aesthetic, maintenance and etc.

From part B, we were required to look for traditional Malaysian shop houses for this task. The design intention, concept, space analysis and also some diagrams to support their analysis need to be determined. Also, we were asked to explore on the use of light and shadows, the aural, tactile and visual qualities of materials and how their juxtapositions can draw out emotional responses that engender a multi-sensory poetic experience.

I have learnt to produce a complete documentation and analysis of materials in respect to physical and chemical properties. Besides, I was able to understand the effects of building materials on aesthetics and structural qualities of a space or building and identify different types of building materials in structural and finishes. Through this project, I have a better understanding on the appropriateness of material used in context several factors occupancy, concept and climate. Also, I found that the analytical skill in understanding selection of building materials for a building was aquired. Upon all of these skills, I was able to applied on the future document of analysis in projects related in this architecture.
