Project 1 - Lighting & Acoustic Performance Evaluation and Design

In this project with a group of 6, Cheong Siew Ying (Eelyn), Chia Wee Min, Chua Chang Yeong (Ronn) Teoh Hui Yu, Wong Voon Yin and me (Tan Zi Cin), we are required to evaluate the environment in terms of lighting and acoustics performance on a case study building. A measured drawing with an appropriate scale of the case study is prepared and all the necessary features which effect on the lighting and acoustics conditions of the case study will carry out. Also, an appraisal of analysis in determining the characteristics and function of daylighting, artificial lighting, noise and sound condition (quality and quantity) in the selected case study within the intended space critically. Their identification of adequacy of the quantity of light and sound/noise for the case study needed to be carried out objectively. The chose case study is a cafe known as Cat In The Box at Damansara.

GROUP & INDIVIDUAL

Throughout this project, I able to work as a group in produce a complete documentation on analysis of space in relation to lighting requirement with pictures, sketches and drawings and analysis of factors which effects the lighting design of space. Also, I able to explore and apply my understanding of building physic such as lighting towards building, construction and materials on existing building projects while evaluate the improvisation by using current materials and technology in relevance to present construction industry.. Moreover, I have basic understanding and analysis of lighting and acoustic layout design and arrangements by using certain methods or calculation like Lumen methods, PSALI, reverberation time and sound transmission coefficient. These skills and methods enable me to apply in my future learning practically in architecture projects.

This project aims to integrate students' understanding of the principles of lighting and acoustics in the context their final design project of studio 5. It encompasses advanced day-lighting systems and the integration of electrical lighting, strategies for noise management and room acoustics (where necessary). This project required to incorporate one A2 board for Lighting Integrated Design and one A2 board for Acoustics Integrated Design. Within the building design, I was required to identify spaces which require artificial lighting and day-lighting. As for the acoustic,  spaces are identified to integrate the external noises and internal noises. Integration must be solution based and advised to incorporate visuals, diagrams and renderings using any environmental design analysis tools in your presentation board(s). Calculations to resolve your design integrations solutions must be attached in A4 and submitted together. All kind of proposals need to have a good justification.

Throughout this project, I learnt in identify and analyze functional needs through case studies to inform lighting and acoustic and understand the principles of lighting and acoustics in library design. Moreover, I able to solve my library design problems in relation to sustainability issues such as natural lighting and site traffic noises and incorporation lighting and acoustics of the identified spaces.
